Method
- Select a fresh piece of ginger root about the size of your thumb, checking that it feels firm and heavy in your hand with taut skin and a clean, spicy aroma.
- Use a microplane grater to grate the ginger directly into your mixing bowl, working over the bowl to catch all the juice that releases.
- Cut your lemon in half and use a citrus juicer to extract every drop of juice into a separate small cup.
- Pour the fresh lemon juice directly into the bowl with your grated ginger and stir well to combine.
- Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and stir thoroughly until the powder is evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
- Add 1 tablespoon of raw honey to the mixture and stir until it dissolves completely and coats all the ingredients.
- Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean bowl, pressing gently on the ginger solids with the back of a spoon to extract maximum liquid.
- Pour the strained liquid evenly into four shot glasses, filling each about three-quarters of the way full.
- Drink your shot quickly in one or two swallows and chase with a glass of water or herbal tea.
Notes
Store finished shots in a clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid in the fridge for up to 5 days. Start with 1/4 teaspoon cayenne and adjust to taste. Drink on an empty stomach or 30 minutes before a meal for maximum absorption. Frozen ginger is easier to grate than fresh. Make a batch at the start of each week for quick daily access.
