French Negroni

A refined variation of the classic Negroni that swaps gin for cognac, delivering a smoother, more complex aperitif.

Ingredients
  

Main
  • 1 ounce 30 ml Cognac
  • 1 ounce 30 ml Campari
  • 1 ounce 30 ml Sweet vermouth
  • Orange peel or twist for garnish
  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Cocktail mixing glass or any drinking glass
  • Bar spoon or long teaspoon
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Strainer (fine mesh preferred)
  • Cocktail coupe glass or rocks glass
  • Ice cubes

Method
 

  1. Gather your ingredients and chill your serving glass in the freezer for 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Fill a mixing glass or sturdy drinking glass with large ice cubes until three-quarters full.
  3. Measure and pour 1 ounce (30 ml) of Cognac over the ice.
  4. Measure and pour 1 ounce (30 ml) of Campari over the Cognac and ice.
  5. Measure and pour 1 ounce (30 ml) of Sweet vermouth into the mixing glass.
  6. Stir the mixture slowly with a bar spoon for 10 to 15 seconds to properly chill and dilute the drink.
  7. Place a strainer over the mixing glass and pour the cocktail into the chilled serving glass, leaving the ice behind.
  8. Twist an orange peel over the drink to release the oils, rub the peel around the glass rim, and drop it in as a garnish.

Notes

Serve immediately as an aperitif or nightcap. Use fresh, large ice cubes and fresh orange peel for best flavor.
