Method
- Chill the lowball glass by filling it with ice and cold water; let it sit for about 30 seconds.
- Discard the ice and water, then add the sugar cube and bitters to the glass.
- Gently muddle the sugar and bitters for about 15 seconds until the sugar begins to dissolve.
- Add the orange slice and cherry, pressing gently to release oils and juice without pulverizing the fruit.
- Fill the glass with one large ice cube or several smaller cubes.
- Pour 2 ounces of brandy slowly over the ice and fruit.
- Stir gently for 20 to 30 seconds with the bar spoon to chill and integrate flavors.
- Top with a splash of cold water or club soda if desired.
- Express an orange peel over the drink, drop it in as garnish along with the cherry, and serve immediately.
Notes
Serve fresh and chilled; do not batch ahead as fresh fruit will oxidize. Variations include substituting maple syrup for sugar or adding extra cherry liqueur for a fruitier twist.
