  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground if possible
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk full-fat canned or fresh

  • Tiny pinch sea salt

  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Whisk or wooden spoon
  • Fine mesh sieve or strainer
  • Two mugs or cups
  • Spoon for stirring

Method

  1. Measure out turmeric powder, ground cinnamon, black pepper, and sea salt and set aside.
  2. Pour 1.5 cups of water into a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until it reaches a gentle simmer (about 5 minutes).
  3. Add the turmeric powder, ground cinnamon, and sea salt to the simmering water and whisk for 30 seconds to dissolve clumps.
  4. Add the grated fresh ginger to the saucepan and let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes to infuse flavor.
  5. Stir in the black pepper and continue simmering for 1 minute to preserve its volatile oils.
  6. Slowly pour in the coconut milk while stirring constantly and heat for 2 minutes without bringing it to a boil.
  7. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher or directly into mugs for a smooth texture.
  8. Divide the tonic between two mugs and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of honey or maple syrup to each, stirring to taste.
