Ingredients

Main
  • 9 lbs Pale Malt 2-row
  • 1 oz Cascade hops bittering
  • 1 oz Cascade hops flavor
  • 1 oz Cascade hops aroma
  • 1 packet of American Ale yeast
  • 5 oz priming sugar for bottling
  • Water enough to reach 5 gallons

Equipment

  • Brewing kettle (at least 5 gallons)
  • Fermentation bucket with airlock
  • Sanitizer
  • Hydrometer
  • Thermometer
  • Bottling equipment
  • Siphoning cane
  • Bottles and caps

Method

  1. Sanitize all your equipment thoroughly to prevent bacteria.
  2. Heat enough water in your brewing kettle to reach a total of 5 gallons to about 165°F (74°C).
  3. Add the crushed pale malt to the heated water, stirring to prevent clumps, and maintain the temperature around 150°F (65°C) for 60 minutes.
  4. After mashing, rinse the grains with hot water to collect the sweet liquid, known as wort.
  5. Bring the wort to a vigorous boil and add the 1 oz of Cascade hops for bittering at the beginning of the boil.
  6. After 30 minutes, add 1 oz of Cascade hops for flavor, and at the end of the boil, add the final 1 oz of Cascade hops for aroma.
  7. Cool the wort quickly to around 70°F (21°C) using a wort chiller or an ice bath.
  8. Transfer the cooled wort to your fermentation bucket and pitch the yeast. Seal it with an airlock and let it ferment for about two weeks.
