Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces premium tequila silver or blanco
  • 1 ounce fresh strawberry puree or cranberry juice
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 0.75 ounce triple sec or Cointreau
  • 0.5 ounce fresh agave nectar or simple syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wheel for garnish
  • Coarse sea salt for rim optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring cups
  • Bar spoon or long spoon for stirring
  • Strainer
  • Margarita glass or coupe glass
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Citrus juicer or hand juicer
  • Small plate for salt rim (optional)

Method

  1. If you want a salt rim, rub a lime wedge around the outer rim of your margarita glass, then dip it into coarse sea salt on a small plate.
  2. If using fresh strawberries, blend about four medium strawberries until completely smooth and strain out any pulp if you prefer a cleaner texture. You should have about one ounce of thick, bright pink puree ready to go.
  3. Use a jigger to carefully measure two ounces of tequila, one ounce of strawberry puree, one ounce of fresh lime juice, 0.75 ounce of triple sec, and 0.5 ounce of agave nectar.
  4. Fill a cocktail shaker about three-quarters full with ice cubes.
  5. Pour the tequila, strawberry puree, lime juice, triple sec, and agave nectar into your ice-filled shaker.
  6. Close the shaker and shake hard for about 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes frosted and cold to the touch.
  7. Use a strainer to pour the margarita into your prepared glass, leaving the ice in the shaker.
  8. Place a lime wheel on the rim or drop it into the drink, then serve right away while the drink is ice-cold.

Notes

Use fresh lime juice without exception. Bottled lime juice tastes sour and bitter and will ruin the balance. Chill your glass by filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink. Taste your strawberry puree before using it and adjust sweetness as needed. For parties, multiply the recipe and stir together in a pitcher with lots of ice. Invest in decent tequila as cheap tequila tastes harsh. Keep ingredients in the freezer for 30 minutes before making the drink for less dilution and stronger flavor.
