Ingredients

Main
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 peppermint patties standard size, about 1.5 ounces each
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1.5 cups milk whole milk works best
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream optional, for topping
  • Crushed candy canes optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe mug or small bowl
  • Microwave or stovetop
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Small saucepan (optional, for stovetop method)
  • Serving mugs

Method

  1. Pour the cocoa powder and sugar into a microwave-safe mug or small bowl. Mix them together with a whisk or spoon until well combined, breaking up any cocoa lumps as you go.
  2. Unwrap your peppermint patties and break them into small pieces with your hands or a knife. If the patties are very hard, you can microwave them for 5-10 seconds first to soften them slightly.
  3. Pour the 1/4 cup of hot water into your cocoa mixture and stir vigorously for about 30 seconds to create a smooth chocolate paste.
  4. Drop the chopped peppermint patties into your chocolate paste and stir well. Let the mixture sit for 20-30 seconds to allow the patties to soften from the residual heat, then stir until they break down completely.
  5. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it steams (about 2-3 minutes). Alternatively, microwave the milk in a separate container for 1.5-2 minutes until hot but not boiling.
  6. Slowly pour the hot milk into your peppermint chocolate paste while stirring constantly. Keep stirring for about one minute to make sure everything is fully combined and smooth.
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract to deepen the flavor and add richness.
  8. Divide the drink between two mugs and serve immediately while hot. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes if desired.

Notes

Make a batch of the chocolate and peppermint paste ahead, store it in a jar in the refrigerator, and simply reheat it with milk whenever you crave a drink. One batch makes about six servings. Use quality peppermint patties with real peppermint oil for best results. Always use hot milk, not cold, to prevent the cocoa from seizing and becoming grainy. The drink stays hot for about 10 minutes, so serve right away.
