Method
- Combine 0.5 ounces hot water and 0.5 ounces honey in a small bowl and stir until dissolved.
- Peel and grate fresh ginger, then press to extract 0.5 ounces of juice or measure 0.5 ounces ginger liqueur.
- Squeeze fresh lemon into a jigger to yield 0.75 ounces of juice, straining out any pulp.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with a generous handful of ice cubes.
- Pour 2 ounces of blended or rye whisky into the shaker over the ice.
- Add the prepared honey water into the shaker.
- Add 0.5 ounces fresh ginger juice (or ginger liqueur) and 0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice to the shaker.
- Shake vigorously for 10 to 12 seconds until well chilled and slightly aerated.
- Strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe glass or rocks glass over fresh ice.
- Garnish with a twisted strip of lemon peel, expressing the oils over the drink and dropping it in.
Notes
Honey water can be made in advance at a 1:1 ratio and stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
