Method
- Grab a highball or rocks glass and run a lime wedge around the rim so it's wet enough to hold the seasoning. Pour Tajin or salt onto a small flat plate, then dip the wet rim into it and rotate to coat evenly.
- Add a generous handful of ice cubes to your prepared glass, filling it about three-quarters full. Using larger ice cubes matters here because they melt slower and keep your drink cold longer without diluting it too quickly.
- Pour 2 ounces of silver tequila into a jigger and add it directly over the ice in your glass.
- Cut a fresh lime in half and squeeze 1/2 ounce of juice into a jigger, making sure to strain out any seeds or pulp.
- Pour the fresh lime juice into your glass over the tequila and ice, stirring gently to combine.
- Pour 3 to 4 ounces of cold grapefruit soda slowly into the glass, pouring it over the back of a bar spoon if you have one to help it integrate smoothly.
- Give the drink a gentle stir with a bar spoon for about 10 seconds to make sure the tequila, juice, and soda mix properly.
- Place a fresh lime wedge on the rim of the glass or drop it into the drink for both visual appeal and so you can squeeze more juice if desired. Serve immediately while the drink is ice-cold.
Notes
Always use freshly squeezed lime juice and keep your grapefruit soda in the coldest part of your fridge, because warm soda makes the drink taste flat and overly sweet within seconds. Use quality grapefruit soda like Jarritos for best results. Store any unsodaed cocktail mixture in the fridge for up to 2 days, then top with fresh soda when ready to serve.
