Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces 60 ml vodka, preferably a quality brand
  • 1 ounce 30 ml Kahlua or coffee liqueur
  • 1 ounce 30 ml fresh espresso, pulled from your Nespresso machine
  • 1 cup ice for shaking
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar optional, for rimming or added sweetness

Equipment

  • Nespresso machine or espresso maker
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger for measuring
  • Martini glass or coupe glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Strainer
  • Small espresso cup or shot glass

Method

  1. Place your martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least one minute while you prepare the drink.
  2. Use your Nespresso machine to pull 1 ounce of espresso into a small cup or shot glass just before mixing.
  3. Pour about 1 cup of ice into your cocktail shaker, filling it roughly two-thirds full.
  4. Using a jigger, measure 2 ounces of vodka and 1 ounce of coffee liqueur into the shaker with the ice.
  5. Carefully pour your freshly pulled espresso into the shaker with the other ingredients.
  6. Close your shaker and shake hard and fast for 10 to 15 seconds, making sure the ice moves around and you hear the rattle of ice against the metal.
  7. Take your chilled glass out of the freezer and place it on your serving surface. If desired, wet the rim with simple syrup or water and dip it into a small dish of sugar.
  8. Using your strainer, carefully pour the shaken mixture from the shaker into your prepared glass, letting the liquid flow smoothly while catching the ice. The foam should rise on top naturally as you pour.

Notes

The key to the perfect espresso martini lies in using truly fresh, hot espresso pulled just seconds before shaking; this creates the thick, luxurious crema that makes the drink look and taste special. Use a quality vodka that you'd actually drink on its own. Don't skip the vigorous shaking step as this aerates the espresso and creates the essential foam layer. Make this drink right before serving rather than preparing it ahead.
