  • 1 whole lemon sliced into rounds
  • 2- inch knob fresh ginger root sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 cup water

Equipment

  • 6-quart crock pot or slow cooker
  • Vegetable peeler or microplane
  • Knife for slicing citrus
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
  • Ladle for serving
  • Mugs or heatproof serving glasses

Method

  1. Slice the orange and lemon into thin rounds, leaving the skin on.
  2. Peel the ginger with a vegetable peeler or spoon and slice into thin coins.
  3. Pour 2 bottles of red wine and 4 cups of apple cider into a 6-quart crock pot.
  4. Add 4 whole cinnamon sticks, 8 to 10 whole cloves, and 3 whole star anise pods to the crock pot.
  5. Add the orange slices, lemon slices, ginger coins, and 1/4 cup of honey to the crock pot.
  6. Pour in 1 cup of water and stir gently.
  7. Cover and cook on low heat for 4 hours, or high heat for 2 hours.
  8. After 2 hours, stir and taste; add more honey or cinnamon as desired, then continue cooking until time is up.
  9. Strain the mulled wine through a fine mesh strainer into mugs and serve hot, garnished with a cinnamon stick or orange slice.

Notes

Keep the mulled wine on the warm setting to maintain flavor and temperature; avoid boiling to prevent bitterness.
