Ingredients

Main
  • 1 to 1.5 teaspoons high-grade culinary matcha powder
  • 3 ounces hot water 160-180°F
  • 6 ounces milk of choice whole, oat, almond, or coconut
  • 0.5 to 1 teaspoon sweetener honey, agave, maple syrup, or simple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
  • Pinch sea salt

Equipment

  • Matcha whisk (chasen) or small metal whisk
  • Small bowl or matcha bowl (chawan)
  • Electric frother or handheld milk frother
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Kettle
  • Tall drinking glass or mug
  • Spoon for stirring

Method

  1. Bring fresh, filtered water to a boil, then let it cool for about 2 minutes until it reaches 160-180°F.
  2. Sift 1 to 1.5 teaspoons matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps, about 30 seconds.
  3. Pour 3 ounces of the heated water into the bowl with matcha to form a paste-like consistency.
  4. Using a matcha whisk, whisk the matcha and water in a back-and-forth motion for 30-45 seconds until smooth and frothy.
  5. Warm 6 ounces milk in a small pitcher on the stove or in the microwave for 30-45 seconds until warm but not steaming.
  6. Froth the warm milk using an electric or handheld frother for about 20 seconds until a light foam forms.
  7. Stir 0.5 to 1 teaspoon sweetener and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract into the frothed milk until fully dissolved.
  8. Pour the sweetened milk into a tall glass, holding back the foam with a spoon to control the foam-to-liquid ratio.
  9. Gently pour the whisked matcha mixture into the milk, stirring slightly for even distribution.
  10. Top with any remaining foam, add a pinch of sea salt, and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve immediately for best texture; components can be prepped ahead but combine just before serving.
