Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces bourbon whiskey
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice large cubes preferred for slower dilution
  • 1 maraschino cherry or cherry skewer

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Bar spoon or long stirring spoon
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Coupe glass, Nick and Nora glass, or martini glass
  • Cutting board and knife for garnish

Method

  1. Measure 2 ounces of bourbon whiskey into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker.
  2. Add 1 ounce of sweet vermouth and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.
  3. Fill the glass with ice, using large cubes to chill without over-diluting.
  4. Stir with a bar spoon for 10 to 15 seconds until well chilled and integrated.
  5. If desired, chill the serving glass by filling it with ice while stirring the cocktail, then discard the ice before pouring.
  6. Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass using a cocktail strainer.
  7. Garnish with a maraschino cherry, placing it in the drink or on the rim with a skewer.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy your Manhattan.

Notes

Chill the serving glass beforehand and adjust the vermouth-to-bourbon ratio to suit your taste.
