Ingredients

Main
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger root freshly grated (about 1/2 inch piece)
  • 1/2 medium lemon juiced (about 1.5 tablespoons juice)
  • 8 ounces water filtered or purified
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey optional
  • Pinch of sea salt optional

Equipment

  • Microplane or box grater
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring spoon
  • Kettle or pot
  • Mug or glass
  • Spoon for stirring

Method

  1. Step 1: Cut a 1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger root and grate it finely using a microplane or box grater.
  2. Step 2: Cut the lemon in half and juice thoroughly to yield about 1.5 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.
  3. Step 3: Pour 8 ounces of filtered or purified water into a kettle and heat until it reaches a gentle simmer (160°F to 170°F), about 3 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Carefully pour the hot water into a mug or glass.
  5. Step 5: Add the freshly grated ginger to the hot water and stir to begin extracting its flavors and compounds.
  6. Step 6: Pour in the fresh lemon juice and stir to combine.
  7. Step 7: Add honey and a pinch of sea salt if desired, stirring until dissolved.
  8. Step 8: If you prefer a smoother drink, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, then taste and adjust lemon or ginger levels as needed.

Notes

Serve hot or cold and adjust sweetness or spice levels to taste. Store prepared lemon ginger water in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and add fresh lemon juice before serving.
