Iced Chai Latte

Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose black tea
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 2 green cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick about 2 inches
  • 3 to 4 black peppercorns
  • 1 inch fresh ginger sliced
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk or milk alternative whole milk, almond, oat, etc.
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons sweetener honey, agave, or simple syrup
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Fine mesh strainer or tea infuser
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Whisk or spoon for stirring
  • Tall glasses
  • Ice maker or ice cube tray

Method
 

  1. Toast 3 whole cloves, 2 green cardamom pods, 1 cinnamon stick, and 3 to 4 black peppercorns in a small saucepan over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Add 1 cup water and 1 inch sliced fresh ginger to the saucepan and bring to a simmer.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer the spices and ginger for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat, add 2 tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose black tea, and steep for 3 to 4 minutes.
  5. Strain the chai concentrate through a fine mesh strainer into a container, discarding solids.
  6. While warm, stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons sweetener until fully dissolved.
  7. Let the chai concentrate cool to room temperature (about 5 minutes) or chill in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 minutes.
  8. Fill tall glasses with 1 cup of ice cubes each.
  9. Pour about 1/2 cup of cooled chai concentrate into each glass.
  10. Slowly pour 1 cup cold milk or milk alternative into each glass and stir gently to combine.

Notes

Make a batch of chai concentrate ahead of time and store in the refrigerator for up to five days for quick iced chai lattes throughout the week.
