Ingredients

Main
  • 2 shots 1.5 ounces or about 44 milliliters espresso
  • 6 ounces 180 milliliters cold water
  • 4 to 6 ice cubes or equivalent crushed ice

Equipment

  • Espresso machine with portafilter and basket
  • Coffee grinder (burr grinder preferred)
  • Tall glass or cup (10-14 ounces)
  • Measuring cup or kitchen scale
  • Spoon or long-handled stirrer
  • Ice cubes or crushed ice

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass with 4 to 6 ice cubes or equivalent crushed ice.
  2. Grind fresh espresso beans to a fine, consistent texture using a burr grinder.
  3. Fill the portafilter basket with ground coffee, level gently, and tamp firmly with even pressure.
  4. Lock the portafilter into the espresso machine’s group head with a quarter turn.
  5. Pull two espresso shots (about 1.5 ounces total), aiming for 25 to 30 seconds of extraction.
  6. Pour the hot espresso directly over the ice in the glass, listening for the sizzle.
  7. Add 6 ounces of cold water to the glass and gently stir to combine.
  8. Taste and adjust water amount if you prefer a stronger or weaker drink.

Notes

Use fresh espresso beans roasted within two weeks and grind just before brewing. Adjust water to customize strength.
