Ingredients

For the Hibiscus Margarita
  • 2 ounces premium silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice about 1 lime
  • 0.75 ounce hibiscus syrup homemade or store-bought
  • 0.5 ounce Cointreau or triple sec
  • Ice cubes
  • Salt or Tajin seasoning for the rim optional
  • Fresh lime wheel for garnish
For the Hibiscus Syrup (Makes about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup water
  • 0.5 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or jar with tight-fitting lid
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Bar strainer or fine-mesh strainer
  • Coupe glass or margarita glass
  • Small saucepan (for making hibiscus syrup)
  • Fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth (for syrup preparation)
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Small plate for salt or sugar rim

Method

  1. Bring 1 cup of water to a gentle boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, add 0.5 cup of dried hibiscus flowers, remove from heat and steep for 15 to 20 minutes until the liquid turns deep crimson.
  2. Strain the flowers through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth, then stir in 0.5 cup of sugar and a pinch of salt until dissolved.
  3. Pour the hibiscus syrup into a glass jar and let it cool to room temperature, about 10 minutes.
  4. If desired, rim your glass with salt or Tajin seasoning by running a cut lime around the rim and dipping it in salt or Tajin.
  5. Add a generous handful of ice cubes to your cocktail shaker or jar.
  6. Pour 2 ounces of silver tequila, 0.5 ounce of Cointreau, and 1 ounce of fresh lime juice into the shaker.
  7. Add 0.75 ounce of hibiscus syrup to the shaker.
  8. Seal the shaker and shake hard and fast for about 15 seconds until the outside becomes frosty and cold.
  9. Strain the margarita into your prepared glass over fresh ice or straight up using a fine-mesh strainer.
  10. Garnish with a fresh lime wheel and serve immediately.

Notes

Make a large batch of hibiscus syrup at the beginning of the week and store it in the refrigerator; you'll then be able to shake together a restaurant-quality margarita in under two minutes whenever the craving strikes.
