Ingredients

Main
  • 2 teaspoons green tea powder or 1 green tea bag
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup evaporated milk or heavy cream
  • Ice cubes as needed

Equipment

  • Fine mesh strainer or tea sieve
  • Small saucepan or kettle for heating water
  • Measuring spoons
  • Tall drinking glasses or cups
  • Long spoon or straw for stirring
  • Ice maker or freezer with ice

Method

  1. Heat 1 cup water to 160 to 170°F in a small saucepan or kettle, about 5 minutes until steaming but not boiling.
  2. Scoop 2 teaspoons green tea powder into a bowl or glass, breaking up clumps with the back of a spoon.
  3. Pour 2 tablespoons of hot water over the powder and stir to create a smooth paste, about 30 seconds.
  4. Slowly add the remaining hot water while stirring constantly until the powder fully dissolves and the tea turns bright green.
  5. Strain the tea through a fine mesh strainer into a clean cup to remove any remaining particles.
  6. Divide ice cubes between two tall glasses, filling them almost to the top.
  7. Slowly pour the hot tea over the ice in both glasses to cool the tea instantly.
  8. Drizzle 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk into each glass, allowing it to sink and swirl.
  9. Pour 2 tablespoons evaporated milk or heavy cream over the back of a spoon into each glass to create a silky top layer.
  10. Stir the drink with a long spoon or straw to combine the milk and tea, or enjoy layered before stirring.

Notes

For best results, bloom the tea powder with a splash of hot water before adding the rest of the water to ensure a smooth texture.
