Ingredients

Main
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder or 1 teaspoon fresh grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 pinch cardamom or 1/8 teaspoon ground
  • 1 pinch black pepper freshly cracked
  • 1 cup coconut milk or milk of choice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup adjust to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil optional, for richness

Equipment

  • Small saucepan or milk warmer
  • Measuring spoons
  • Whisk or milk frother
  • Two mugs
  • Wooden spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer (optional)

Method

  1. Measure out turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper into a small bowl and combine them to prevent lumps when they hit the liquid.
  2. Add 1 cup of water to a small saucepan and place over medium heat until steaming but not quite boiling.
  3. Once the water is steaming, whisk in your spice blend slowly to prevent clumping and ensure even dispersion.
  4. Let the spiced water simmer for about 1 minute, stirring occasionally, so the flavors can fully bloom.
  5. Pour in 1 cup of milk and reduce heat to medium-low, stirring gently to combine with the spices.
  6. Let the mixture warm for about 1 minute, stirring occasionally, until small steam wisps rise from the surface. Do not let it boil.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in honey or maple syrup to taste while the drink is still hot.
  8. Use a milk frother to create a light foam on top if desired, then pour into mugs and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

The black pepper is essential for maximum health benefits from the turmeric, as it activates curcumin and makes it more bioavailable to your body. Use fresh, high-quality turmeric powder for the brightest color and cleanest flavor. Store leftover golden milk in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring well before reheating to redistribute settled spices.
