Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 ounces premium vodka or gin
  • 0.75 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 ounces elderflower liqueur
  • 1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves torn
  • 6 fresh mint leaves
  • 0.5 ounces simple syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 ounce sparkling water or club soda optional
  • Fresh basil sprig for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Bar spoon or long-handled mixing spoon
  • Jigger or shot glass
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Citrus juicer or hand squeezer
  • Coupe glass or rocks glass
  • Cutting board and small knife

Method
 

  1. Fill your chosen glass with ice to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
  2. Measure 2 ounces of vodka or gin into a jigger and set aside.
  3. Cut and juice fresh lime to yield 0.75 ounces of juice, straining out seeds.
  4. Hand-tear basil leaves into rough pieces and gather mint leaves.
  5. Place torn basil and mint in the shaker and gently muddle 4 to 5 times.
  6. Add the measured spirit, fresh lime juice, elderflower liqueur and simple syrup to the shaker.
  7. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10 to 12 seconds until frosted.
  8. Strain the mixture into your chilled glass over fresh ice, leaving herb solids behind.
  9. Garnish with a fresh basil sprig and serve immediately.

Notes

For a lighter version add a splash of sparkling water and adjust simple syrup to taste.
