  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Hawthorne strainer or julep strainer
  • Coupe glass or cocktail glass
  • Citrus juicer or lemon squeezer

Method

  1. Chill the coupe glass by filling it with ice water and let it sit while preparing the cocktail.
  2. Measure 2 ounces of whiskey or gin into a jigger.
  3. Measure 1 ounce of sweet vermouth into the jigger.
  4. Squeeze fresh lemon juice to obtain 0.5 ounce and add it to the jigger.
  5. Measure 0.5 ounce of simple syrup and pour it into the jigger with the other ingredients.
  6. Discard the ice water from the chilled coupe glass and set the glass aside.
  7. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice cubes until it is about three-quarters full.
  8. Combine the whiskey or gin, sweet vermouth, lemon juice, and simple syrup in the shaker.
  9. Shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until the shaker is frosty cold.
  10. Strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe glass, leaving the ice behind in the shaker.
  11. Garnish with a lemon twist by expressing the oils over the drink and placing it in the glass.
