Ingredients

Main
  • 1.5 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 2 ounces heavy cream or half and half
  • 1 ounce fresh orange juice
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange peel for garnish
  • Pinch of nutmeg for garnish optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Jigger or measuring spoon
  • Bar spoon
  • Rocks glass or lowball glass
  • Citrus zester or vegetable peeler

Method

  1. Fill your rocks glass with ice cubes until it reaches about three-quarters full.
  2. Using a jigger, pour exactly 1.5 ounces of vanilla vodka into your cocktail shaker.
  3. Measure 1 ounce of orange liqueur and add it to the shaker with the vodka.
  4. Add 1 ounce of fresh orange juice to the shaker and give it a quick stir to combine.
  5. Pour 2 ounces of heavy cream into the shaker.
  6. Add a handful of ice cubes to your cocktail shaker until it's about two-thirds full.
  7. Close the shaker and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside becomes frosty and cold.
  8. Using a cocktail strainer, pour the mixture into your ice-filled glass, leaving the ice from the shaker behind.
  9. Twist an orange peel over the drink to release its oils, then drop it into the glass as garnish.
  10. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of fresh nutmeg over the top if desired.

Notes

Chill your glass in the freezer for five minutes before building the drink for optimal temperature. Use the coldest ingredients available and squeeze orange juice fresh whenever possible. Make this drink right before serving rather than batching ahead, since cream can separate if the cocktail sits too long.
