A clean, balanced and ice-cold martini made with gin and dry vermouth, stirred and garnished with a lemon twist.

Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2.5 ounces 75 milliliters gin
  • 0.5 ounce 15 milliliters dry vermouth
  • Plenty of high-quality ice cubes or one large cube
  • 1 lemon twist
  • 1 green cocktail olive optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Cocktail strainer (Hawthorne or julep)
  • Jigger for measuring
  • Martini glass or coupe glass
  • Long-handled bar spoon
  • Ice (preferably large cubes)
  • Citrus peeler or microplane for garnish

Method
 

  1. Chill the martini glass in the freezer for at least five minutes.
  2. Fill the cocktail shaker or mixing glass with plenty of large ice cubes.
  3. Measure and pour 2.5 ounces of gin into the mixing vessel.
  4. Add 0.5 ounce of dry vermouth to the gin.
  5. Stir gently with a long-handled bar spoon for about 30 seconds to chill and dilute.
  6. Strain the mixture into the chilled martini glass using a hawthorne or julep strainer.
  7. Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils, then drop it into the glass.
  8. Serve immediately while the martini is at peak temperature and dilution.

Notes

Chill glass and mixing vessel before starting, and use quality gin and the coldest ingredients possible for a crisp, well-balanced martini.
