Method
- Start with freshly brewed coffee using your preferred method, whether that's a drip machine, French press, or pour over. Use quality beans ground to medium fineness and brew at the correct temperature (between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit) for optimal extraction.
- Transfer 8 ounces of hot coffee into your favorite mug immediately after brewing. Pouring fresh coffee into the mug while it's still hot allows the ingredients you add next to dissolve and blend smoothly.
- Measure 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt or kosher salt into a small spoon. This precise amount neutralizes the bitter compounds coffee naturally produces without making your drink taste salty.
- Pour 1 tablespoon of cold water into a small bowl and add your measured salt to it. Mixing the salt with cold water first prevents it from clumping when it hits the hot coffee and ensures even distribution.
- Stir the salt and cold water together for about 10 seconds until the salt mostly dissolves. A fully dissolved salt mixture blends seamlessly into your coffee without any gritty texture.
- Slowly pour the salt and water mixture into your mug of hot coffee while stirring gently. Gentle stirring incorporates the salt evenly throughout the coffee and prevents any bitter spots.
- If using vanilla extract and butter, add them now while the coffee is still hot. The heat helps these ingredients melt and incorporate fully, creating a cohesive flavor rather than floating on top.
- Stir the coffee thoroughly for about 20 seconds to ensure all ingredients are fully blended. Give it a quick taste and adjust sweetness or additions to your preference before enjoying.
Notes
Sea salt neutralizes bitter compounds in coffee and brings out natural sweetness. If you only have table salt, use half the amount since it's more densely packed and saltier. Cold water cools the coffee slightly and helps distribute salt evenly without clumping. Vanilla extract adds depth and warmth to the flavor profile. Butter creates a silky mouthfeel similar to a café latte without adding dairy. Ghee or MCT oil provides similar richness with different flavor notes.
