Ingredients

Highball
  • 2 ounces whiskey bourbon, rye, or Scotch
  • 4 to 6 ounces soda water ginger ale, or cola
  • Ice large cubes preferred over crushed
  • Optional: lemon or lime twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Highball glass or tall cocktail glass (10 to 12 ounces)
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon for stirring
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring whiskey
  • Ice maker or quality ice
  • Bottle opener or cap remover for soda

Method

  1. Fill a highball glass three-quarters full with large ice cubes to chill the glass.
  2. Pour exactly 2 ounces of whiskey into a jigger and add it to the ice-filled glass.
  3. Slowly top the glass with 4 to 6 ounces of your chosen mixer to preserve carbonation.
  4. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 5 to 10 seconds to combine ingredients without losing fizz.
  5. Taste and adjust by adding more whiskey or mixer until it reaches your preferred balance.
  6. Express a lemon or lime twist over the drink and drop it in for a subtle citrus aroma, if desired.
  7. Serve immediately while the ice is solid and the carbonation is at its peak.
  8. Repeat the process to make additional highballs as needed.

Notes

Use the largest ice cubes possible to slow dilution and keep your highball cold and crisp.
