Method
- Place your shot glass or cocktail glass in the freezer for at least two minutes before mixing to chill it.
- Using a jigger, pour 1.5 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey into your chilled glass.
- Cut a lime in half and squeeze 0.5 ounce of fresh juice into a small cup or directly into the glass.
- Pour 0.5 ounce of hot sauce (or start with 3 to 4 dashes if you prefer less heat) directly into the glass with the whiskey and lime juice.
- Using a bar spoon or regular spoon, stir the mixture for about 10 seconds to fully combine all ingredients and ensure the hot sauce distributes evenly.
- Take a small sip and assess the balance. If the heat feels overwhelming, add a tiny bit more whiskey; if the spice is too mild, add another dash of hot sauce.
- Cut a fresh lime wedge and place it on the rim of the glass as garnish.
- Serve immediately while it's still cold and the flavors are sharp and defined.
Notes
Start with less hot sauce than you think you can handle, since the heat builds and intensifies. Use mid-range bourbon or rye rather than expensive premium whiskey. Always use fresh lime juice, not bottled. The drink should be consumed immediately after mixing for optimal flavor. Can be customized with different hot sauces or variations like adding honey syrup for a Sweet Heat version or substituting mezcal for a smoky twist.
