Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries
  • 3 cups cold water
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice about 2 limes
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar
  • 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon chipotle powder optional, for additional heat
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • Ice for serving
  • Fresh lime slices and fresh berries for garnish

Method
 

  1. Rinse fresh berries or thaw frozen berries slightly and remove any stems; halve large berries if needed.
  2. Combine 2 cups berries and 3 cups cold water in a blender.
  3. Add 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce and 1/4 cup fresh lime juice to the blender.
  4. Blend on high speed for 60 to 90 seconds until completely smooth.
  5. Strain mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher, pressing gently with a wooden spoon to extract liquid.
  6. Stir in 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar and 1/4 teaspoon sea salt until dissolved.
  7. Taste and add up to 1/4 teaspoon chipotle powder if additional heat is desired.
  8. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill and let flavors meld before serving over ice with garnishes.

Notes

Make this drink the night before a gathering and store it in the refrigerator; the flavors deepen and become more harmonious after sitting together.
