A fruit-forward twist on the classic Manhattan featuring bourbon, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur, and bitters, stirred and served chilled with a maraschino cherry garnish.

Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 ounces bourbon whiskey
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 0.5 ounce cherry liqueur such as Cherry Heering or Luxardo cherry liqueur
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 5 to 6 ice cubes for mixing
  • 1 large ice sphere or large cube for serving
  • 1 fresh cherry or maraschino cherry for garnish
  • Optional: orange peel for expressing over the drink

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Coupe glass
  • Citrus juicer (optional)
  • Cutting board and knife

Method
 

  1. Chill a coupe glass in the freezer for at least 2 minutes.
  2. Add 5 to 6 ice cubes to a mixing glass or shaker.
  3. Measure and pour 2 ounces bourbon whiskey over the ice.
  4. Add 1 ounce sweet vermouth to the mixing glass.
  5. Add 0.5 ounce cherry liqueur to the mixture.
  6. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  7. Stir with a bar spoon for 10 to 15 seconds until the glass is frosty.
  8. Strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe glass using a Hawthorne strainer.
  9. Add one large ice sphere or cube to the glass.
  10. Garnish with a fresh cherry or maraschino cherry and express an orange peel over the drink if using.

Notes

You can prepare the bourbon, vermouth, and cherry liqueur mix and store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks; stir fresh with ice before serving for best results.
