Ingredients

Main
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 6 ounces strong black tea brewed hot
  • 3 ounces whole milk or milk alternative
  • 4 to 6 ice cubes if serving cold

Equipment

  • Small saucepan or skillet
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Glass or mug (8 to 12 ounces)
  • Kettle for boiling water
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Straw (optional)

Method

  1. Combine 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar and 1 teaspoon water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir constantly for 2 to 3 minutes until the sugar melts and becomes glossy without burning.
  3. Quickly pour the hot caramel syrup into the bottom of an 8 to 12-ounce glass or mug.
  4. Boil water and steep 1 black tea bag (or 1 teaspoon loose leaf tea) in 6 ounces of hot water for 3 to 4 minutes to make strong tea.
  5. Pour the brewed tea into the glass over the brown sugar syrup.
  6. Slowly pour 3 ounces of cold whole milk (or milk alternative) into the tea to create a layered effect.
  7. Stir the drink thoroughly with a spoon or straw for about 30 seconds until the syrup fully dissolves.
  8. Serve immediately while hot, or if serving iced, add 4 to 6 ice cubes and let chill for 1 minute before drinking.

Notes

For best results, make the brown sugar syrup immediately before serving to prevent it from hardening and ensure a smooth, caramel flavor.
