Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries rinsed
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar optional
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 black tea bags or 1 teaspoon loose black tea optional
  • 4-5 fresh mint leaves optional garnish

Equipment

  • Kettle or small saucepan
  • Teapot or heat-safe pitcher
  • Fine mesh strainer or tea infuser
  • Mugs or teacups
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Rinse the blueberries in a fine mesh strainer under cool running water; if using frozen berries, let them thaw at room temperature for 5 minutes.
  2. Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a kettle or small saucepan.
  3. Place the prepared blueberries in a teapot or heat-safe pitcher and crush them gently with the back of a spoon.
  4. Pour the boiling water over the blueberries and stir gently to combine.
  5. If using, add 2 black tea bags or 1 teaspoon of loose black tea to the pot and cover.
  6. Let the tea steep, covered, for 8 to 10 minutes (5 minutes for a lighter flavor).
  7. Strain the tea through a fine mesh strainer or tea infuser into mugs or a pitcher, pressing gently on the berries to extract extra flavor.
  8. Stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar to taste; serve hot or pour over ice for iced tea.

Notes

Store brewed tea in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, stirring gently before serving. Freeze excess tea in ice cube trays for up to 2 months and reheat gently on low heat or in 30-second microwave intervals.
