Ingredients

Main
  • 64 ounces pineapple juice about two 32-ounce bottles
  • 46 ounces blue Hawaiian Punch concentrate or blue sports drink
  • 32 ounces lemon-lime soda such as Sprite or 7UP
  • 2 cups ice
Optional Adult Version
  • 12 ounces rum optional, for adult version
  • 24 ounces coconut rum optional, for tropical version
Garnishes
  • 1 fresh pineapple cut into spears for garnish
  • Fresh maraschino cherries for garnish
  • Fresh mint leaves optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large punch bowl or pitcher
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Long stirring spoon or punch ladle
  • Ladle for serving
  • Cutting board and knife for garnishes
  • Ice bucket (optional)

Method

  1. Set out your punch bowl, all liquid ingredients, measuring cups, and a long spoon on your counter. Having everything ready means you won't waste time hunting for bottles or tools once you start mixing.
  2. Pour both bottles of pineapple juice (64 ounces total) into your punch bowl. This creates a fruity foundation that will balance the sweetness of the punch concentrate and give the punch natural tropical flavor.
  3. Pour the entire bottle of blue Hawaiian Punch concentrate (46 ounces) directly into the bowl with the pineapple juice. Stir well for about 30 seconds to combine the two liquids thoroughly, making sure no concentrate settles at the bottom.
  4. Add the lemon-lime soda (32 ounces) to the bowl, pouring slowly to preserve the carbonation. The fizz from the soda adds lightness and brightness that makes the punch refreshing.
  5. If making an adult version, pour in the rum or coconut rum now and stir gently for about 15 seconds. Add the alcohol after the other ingredients are combined so you can control the strength of the final drink.
  6. Add about 2 cups of ice to the bowl and stir gently a few times. The ice will keep the punch cold throughout the party without watering it down too quickly.
  7. Cut the fresh pineapple into spears and arrange them on a cutting board next to the punch bowl. Place a small bowl of maraschino cherries and any fresh mint nearby for guests to add to their individual cups if desired.
  8. Ladle a small sample into a cup and taste it. If you prefer it sweeter, add a bit more pineapple juice or a splash of simple syrup; if it's too sweet, add more soda or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
  9. Place a ladle in the punch bowl and serve immediately. The punch tastes best served immediately while the ice is still solid and the soda still has carbonation.

Notes

Pro Tip: Freeze pineapple chunks or blueberries inside ice cubes the night before your party; they look stunning as they float in the punch and add flavor as they melt without diluting the drink. Keep your punch bowl in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before the party so all ingredients are cold when combined. Mix the punch no more than 1 hour before serving to keep the soda fizzy. Reserve extra soda and pineapple juice to top up the punch midway through the party. Leftover punch keeps in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
