Ingredients
  

Main
  • 6 to 8 fresh blackberries
  • 1 sugar cube or 0.5 teaspoons simple syrup
  • 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 ounces whiskey bourbon, rye, or your preferred choice
  • 1 strip orange peel
  • Ice cubes
  • Splash water optional

Equipment

  • Rocks glass (10 to 12 ounces)
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Cocktail strainer (optional)
  • Cutting board
  • Vegetable peeler or channel knife

Method
 

  1. Add one large ice cube or several smaller ice cubes to a rocks glass.
  2. Place six to eight fresh blackberries into the empty rocks glass.
  3. Drop one sugar cube or 0.5 teaspoons of simple syrup onto the blackberries and add two to three dashes of Angostura bitters.
  4. Gently muddle the berries and sugar in the glass for 10 to 15 seconds to release juice and dissolve the sugar.
  5. Pour two ounces of whiskey into the glass.
  6. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 10 seconds to chill and combine the flavors.
  7. Cut a two-inch strip of orange peel, avoiding the white pith.
  8. Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink and drop the peel into the glass as a garnish.

Notes

Serve immediately and enjoy while cold. Adjust sweetness and bitters to taste.
