Ingredients

Main
  • 1.5 ounces dry gin
  • 0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice about half a lemon
  • 0.5 ounces simple syrup
  • 0.5 ounces blackberry liqueur or blackberry syrup
  • 8 to 10 fresh blackberries
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon wheel or twist for garnish
  • Fresh mint sprig optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Strainer (Hawthorne)
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Rocks glass or cocktail glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Small knife for lemon twist

Method

  1. Place a cocktail or rocks glass in the freezer and chill for at least 2 minutes.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker three-quarters full with ice cubes.
  3. Pour 1.5 ounces dry gin, 0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice, and 0.5 ounces simple syrup into the shaker.
  4. Add 8 to 10 fresh blackberries and gently muddle for about 10 seconds to release juices without pulverizing the seeds.
  5. Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels frosty.
  6. Remove the chilled glass from the freezer and fill it with fresh ice cubes.
  7. Strain the cocktail mixture into the prepared glass, catching any pulp with the strainer.
  8. Float 0.5 ounces of blackberry liqueur by slowly pouring it over the back of a bar spoon just above the drink surface.
  9. Garnish with a lemon wheel or twist and a fresh mint sprig, then serve immediately.

Notes

Serve immediately in a chilled glass to maintain optimum temperature and flavor.
