  • Bourbon or rye whiskey - 2 cups 16 ounces
  • Demerara or simple syrup - 1/4 cup
  • Angostura bitters - 16 dashes about 1 tablespoon
  • Orange peel strips - 8 pieces for garnish
  • Maraschino cherries - 8 pieces optional
  • Ice - for serving
  • Water - 1/4 cup optional, for dilution preference

  • Measuring jigger or shot glass
  • Bar spoon or long mixing spoon
  • Rocks glasses or drinking glasses
  • Strainer (optional but recommended)
  • Citrus peeler or channel knife
  • Ice bucket or freezer

Method
 

  1. Pour 2 cups of bourbon or rye whiskey into a large pitcher or mixing bowl.
  2. Measure out 1/4 cup of demerara syrup and add it to the whiskey; dissolve solid sugar in warm water first if needed.
  3. Add 16 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixture.
  4. Pour in 1/4 cup of water to soften the proof and stir thoroughly.
  5. Stir the batch with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds until fully combined.
  6. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours.
  7. Fill eight rocks glasses with large ice cubes.
  8. Divide the batch evenly among the glasses, pouring about 2 to 2.5 ounces each.
  9. Express an orange peel over each glass, garnish with peel and optional cherry.

Notes

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes; stir gently before serving.
