Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces tequila preferably 100% agave, blanco or reposado
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice from about half a lime
  • 3 ounces tomato juice fresh or quality canned
  • 2 to 3 dashes hot sauce Tabasco, Valentina, or similar
  • 1 dash Maggi seasoning or soy sauce as an alternative
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce optional, adds depth
  • Sea salt for rimming the glass
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Ice cubes for serving

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Jigger or measuring shot glass
  • Bar spoon or long mixing spoon
  • Strainer or cocktail sieve
  • Highball or rocks glass
  • Lime squeezer or citrus juicer
  • Small plate for salt rim
  • Bar towel or napkin

Method

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a highball or rocks glass to moisten it for the salt rim.
  2. Pour a small amount of sea salt onto a plate and gently press the moistened rim into the salt, rotating to coat evenly.
  3. Fill the salted glass generously with ice cubes to ensure the drink stays chilled.
  4. Measure and pour 2 ounces of tequila over the ice using a jigger.
  5. Squeeze half a lime to extract about 1/2 ounce of fresh lime juice and add it to the glass.
  6. Add 3 ounces of tomato juice to the glass, pouring it over the ice and tequila.
  7. Season with 1 dash of Maggi seasoning and 2 to 3 dashes of hot sauce, starting conservatively and adjusting to taste.
  8. Stir gently for about 10 seconds with a bar spoon to fully incorporate the ingredients, then taste and adjust seasoning or lime if desired.
  9. Garnish with a lime wedge on the rim and serve immediately while cold.

Notes

Chill the glass before assembling the cocktail to keep the Batanga cold longer.
