Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces bourbon whiskey 100 proof or higher
  • 4 to 6 ounces ginger beer non-alcoholic, chilled
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • Ice cubes preferably large
  • Lime wheel or wedge for garnish

Equipment

  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon or long spoon
  • Copper mug or cocktail glass
  • Muddler (optional, for lime)
  • Knife for cutting lime
  • Cutting board
  • Ice bucket or freezer

Method

  1. Chill your copper mug or glass by filling it with ice and setting it aside for 1 minute.
  2. Discard the ice, then fill the chilled glass three-quarters full with fresh ice cubes.
  3. Measure 2 ounces of bourbon whiskey using a jigger and pour it into the ice-filled glass.
  4. Squeeze half a fresh lime to obtain 1/2 ounce of juice and pour it over the bourbon and ice.
  5. Stir the bourbon and lime juice together gently with a bar spoon for about 10 seconds.
  6. Top the drink with 4 to 6 ounces of chilled ginger beer, pouring gently to preserve carbonation.
  7. Stir the cocktail gently for 5 to 10 seconds to combine the flavors without over-diluting.
  8. Express the oils of a lime wheel over the drink, then garnish the rim or drop it into the glass before serving.

Notes

Use a higher-proof bourbon (at least 100 proof) for best flavor and add the ginger beer last to preserve carbonation.
