Ingredients

Main
  • 1 ripe cantaloupe peeled, seeded, and chopped into chunks (about 6 cups)
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup optional
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish optional

Equipment

  • Sharp chef's knife
  • Cutting board
  • Large blender or food processor
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Large pitcher
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Glasses for serving

Method

  1. Choose a heavy cantaloupe that smells sweet and fragrant at the stem end.
  2. Cut the cantaloupe in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, peel the rind, and chop into 2-inch chunks.
  3. Measure approximately 6 cups of melon chunks and place them in a blender.
  4. Add 4 cups of cold water to the blender and blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds until completely smooth.
  5. Strain the blended mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large pitcher, pressing with a spoon to extract all liquid.
  6. Stir in 2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice and a pinch of sea salt, then taste and add 1 tablespoon of honey or agave syrup if desired.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator or freeze the pitcher for 30 minutes to keep the drink very cold before serving.
  8. Serve over ice cubes and garnish with fresh mint leaves if using.

Notes

Chill your pitcher in the freezer for 30 minutes before serving to keep the drink colder longer and reduce dilution from ice.
