Ingredients

Main
  • 2-3 lbs malted barley depending on the recipe
  • 1-2 oz hops varies by style
  • 1 packet of suitable brewing yeast
  • 1 gallon of filtered water
  • 3/4 cup sugar for priming, if bottling

Equipment

  • 1-gallon glass carboy or fermentation jug
  • Airlock and stopper
  • Large pot (at least 3 gallons)
  • Sanitizer (like Star San)
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Hydrometer (optional, for measuring specific gravity)
  • Bottling bucket or siphon
  • Bottles and caps (for bottling)

Method

  1. Sanitize all equipment to prevent contamination.
  2. In a large pot, bring 1 gallon of water to a boil.
  3. Once boiling, remove from heat and add malted barley. Stir well and let steep for 30 minutes.
  4. Strain the mixture to separate liquid (wort) from the grains.
  5. Bring the wort back to a boil and add hops according to your recipe.
  6. After boiling, cool the wort quickly to room temperature.
  7. Transfer cooled wort into sanitized fermentation jug. Pitch the yeast on top and seal with airlock.
  8. After two weeks of fermentation, add priming sugar to bottling bucket.
  9. Siphon the beer into bottles and cap them.

Notes

Patience yields better beer. Experiment with different hops and malts for unique flavors.
